hands poised over the keyboard, fingers tapered to points, skin like caramel. car-a-mel. car-mel. does it matter? no, not really. just tiny discrepancies. like the chip of her nail, or the scar slightly to the left of her right index finger. minutes imperfections that showed her for who she was. human, nothing more, nothing less. as if it ever were that simple.

her finger hits the white key, then the black. a pause. black key, white key, white key, black key. a sudden jumble of notes. a pause, again. she moves to hit another key, her finger hovers uncertainly above the stretch of white keys. a hesitant touch of the key, a jarring noise. a frightened pause, the wrongness of the note echoing in the silence. a pregnant pause, filled with expectation and bated breath. the dying remanants of the last note fade away, leaving a huge gaping hole into which the silence rushes. the stillness, the silence, it's overwhelming, like water, flowing into each nook and cranny, and drowning out everything.

death hangs in the air, the demise of sound and noise and music. nothing stirs, the silence drags on for eternity, an endless casket of anti-sound. it's stifling, suffocating, the lack of noise, every last drop of sound drained and dripped dry. unnerving, unreal, unending, till even time itself ceases to exist.

a sudden movement, a rustle of a skirt, a sharp breath. it is as if the life that was sucked out of the air suddenly came pouring back in, the bursting of the dam. energy courses through the air, rich with the saturation of sound. a shift, from the lack of sound, life, to the pulsing rythm and beat. the difference is stark, like a naked child laughing in a roomful of unsmiling men. the child gurgles in delight, oblivious to the men, just as the sound slides smoothly into crevices which silence once occupied.

a musical note, her finger rests on a white key, dragging out the sound. she waits, the note fades, with newfound grace, her fingers glide over the keyboard, each note exceuted with the highest perfection. black, white, white, white, black, it all blurs into one, and bursts into harmonious melody. her finger comes to a rest on a black key, the high note stretched to breaking point, then released, fading to silence once again.

the yin meets the yang, the black meets the white, and the world is balanced again. in perfect harmony.
